Verification is the new code review gate

Agents can fail cleanly while dashboards stay green, and verification is the fix.

Teams that add verification CLIs and eval gates get a feedback loop; teams that wait find out from customers.

  • The safety illusion. Agents can fail cleanly: a refund never gets issued, a production database gets deleted in nine seconds, and dashboards stay green.

WorkOS and Langfuse both show the same gap: the tool call never happens, standard metrics catch nothing.

The demos are contrived, but the failure mode is concrete.

Without verification gates, you find out when a customer calls.

  • GPU money traps. LLM token generation is memory-bound, so buying faster GPUs won't help.

Decode runs at about 1 FLOP per byte; a B200's ridge is 281, so the chip idles waiting for memory.

Batching and memory bandwidth move throughput more than raw FLOPs do.

Run the roofline estimate before the next capacity purchase.

  • Agent payments aren't real. Agent payment protocols are near zero in practice, and API keys are beating them.

Stripe's protocol moved about $1,500 in 30 days; Apify's marketplace paid creators nearly $2 million.

Autonomous purchasing needs variable billing and trust directories, none of which are solid yet.

Keep agents on fixed accounts and revisit when volumes say otherwise.

My take

I think the verification-first argument is the right bet for this year.

The OpenCode breach adds urgency: BYOK keys are now a target, and the durable fix is proving what an agent actually did.

But I'd push back on the assumption that every team needs a bespoke CLI per app.

Start with one deterministic check per critical path and leave the rest for later.

The hard part is funding the human review time for golden datasets.

No tool solves that.
