Evaluation and oversight now gate agent progress

Don't buy another model upgrade until you've built an eval loop.

Across today's talks, model choice matters less than evaluation loops, verifier quality, and human-in-the-loop governance.

  • The eval wall. Agent improvements stall without a verifier-scored sandbox: that's the wall three teams hit.

The OpenEnv Arena screened 90,000 environments and found roughly 800 usable.

The Arize engineer built a CI-style regression loop because demos missed regressions.

Leash Bio uses pre-measured binding data to score agent decisions.

Budget for eval infrastructure before model upgrades.

  • Human in the loop. The human job's shifting from writing to reviewing, curating, and specifying.

Greptile puts a useful review agent at $3 to $25 per PR and says it needs a dedicated maintenance team.

A Shopify design lead says taste and curation now gate output.

The InfoQ talk makes context curation a first-class artifact with evals and versioning.

    The scarce skill is editing.

  • Governance as code. OpenAI's Agents SDK ships approval gates, guardrails, and lifecycle hooks, turning governance into a coding decision.

Google's managed agents push ops and governance into the cloud.

Both are demos with no production evidence, but the direction's clear: leaders should decide where human approval sits before agents ship.

My take

Stop paying for model upgrades until you've built a verifier.

The pattern across today's talks is unanimous: evaluation, context, and governance decide agent ROI more than model capability.

We've spent too long chasing frontier models while ignoring the sandbox, the eval, and the human approval flow.

Build a sandbox, score outcomes, and put a human gate on merges.

That's where the gains compound, and it's cheaper than one GPU cluster.
